A few weeks back I was researching afternoon tea vouchers for a Mother’s Day present. Something that I occasionally do with my Mum as a treat is get dressed up, go for an afternoon tea and get to spend one-on-one time together. However since going vegan we haven’t yet had the chance to do this. When looking for a vegan afternoon tea, I wasn’t surprised with the lack of options in Brighton. However I was very grateful to find a vegan afternoon tea, which was served at a small tea-salon in Brighton. From what I could see online, the vegan sample menu looked elegant and very traditional. I couldn’t find any pictures on the website of the tea-salon or food, so I didn’t really know what to expect from the experience. I found the pricing very reasonable, for a standard afternoon tea, at £23.50 per person, with prices increasing depending on adding alcoholic drinks. So I booked it.
In all honestly I wasn’t preparing to write a blog about our vegan experience at Metrodeco, however I was so impressed with the experience, that I couldn’t not. So, i’ll dive straight in… Metrodeco is a tea-salon based in Kemp Town, Brighton, about a 25-30 minute walk from Churchill Square. We went on a drizzly day, which seemed to work quite nicely as the tea-salon was lovely and cozy, with a quirky vintage feel to it. Velvet throne arm chairs, cheetah print chairs and leather buttoned sofas. Each unique table displayed classic floral vintage type crockery and a gin bottle holding beautiful fresh flowers. Overall the look and feel of the tea-salon added to the experience. It didn’t feel as though we were just there for sandwiches and scones.

I usually like to know what I’m getting myself into, which normally entails researching the menus and style/look. As previously mentioned the marketing may have been lacking a bit, however I was so desperate to find a vegan afternoon tea for the perfect Mothers Day present, that I was willing to take the chance. It’s fair to say that the overall look and feel of Metrodeco exceeded my expectations. But it did not end there. Upon arrival we were shown to our sweet little table and handed a tea menu. What I did not realise was not only was the tea unlimited, but you could try as many teas as you wanted and were talking about 25 to choose from. Now I love a cuppa, which Brit doesn’t. But what I loved about Metrodeco was that there was so many different varieties to choose from. Fruity, floral, matcha, rooibos, classic, green tea, black tea, white tea. It honestly felt endless. To begin with I settled with a Topsy Tea, a South African rooibos with notes of bergamot and vanilla. Later on a finished with Jasmine Dragon Pearls, which are hand rolled pearls of green tea infused with sweet jasmine. It was to delicious, I didn’t even know if tea could be delicious but it was. The tea choices probably made the experience for me.

After taking some obligatory photo’s, our vegan afternoon tea arrived and we were talked through the layers of food. The first layer was the savouries, cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches, mustard sausage roll, beetroot hummus and pickle blini and a smashed chickpea, rocket and pickle flat bread. Um yum. The next layer was your traditional scones, with handmade jam and it even came with a vegan spread. The top layer was your very indulgent bite sized desserts. This included a rich chocolate and cranberry tiffin, a pistachio and rose sponge cake, a sticky walnut cake and a square of rocky road. I think it’s fair to say that once again my expectations were exceeded. It just looked beautiful and at the same time still had the traditional afternoon tea elements but also some contemporary twists. And not to be a typical vegan but personally our vegan afternoon tea looked way better than the non-vegan afternoon tea, it had so much more colour, more vibrance. Above all the food was so yummy and played a massive part in the contribution to vegan food.

For something that was just meant to be an opportunity to spend time with my mum, it actually turned out to be a lovely part in our day. Before we knew it 2 hours had gone by, we were stuffed and ready for a nap. If afternoon tea isn’t your thing then the tea-salon operates just like a cafe, for tea, cocktails, cakes and more. One thing I did notice on the menu was a vegan fish finger sandwich, guess I’ll just have to go back.
